Trojans Shield Pioneers in Doubleheader Sweep

Trojans Shield Pioneers in Doubleheader Sweep- Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 4/22/26

The Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University swept the Pioneers in this afternoon's road American Midwest Conference matchup, handling the Pioneers after 5-innings in both contests.

Game One: (5-innings)

Crowley's Ridge- 1

Hannibal-LaGrange-9

Hannibal, MO- CRC fell in the first battle with the Trojans, seeing the hosting HLGU plate 9 runs off 12 team-hits and limiting the Pioneers to 1 run off 9 team-hits. HLGU claimed the advantage in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs with a single through the right side of the Pioneer defense.

This lead gained by the Trojans would be sufficient, despite sophomore Maddie Burris answering immediately for the Pioneers the following frame with an RBI single to right center, scoring Aimee Buckley, as unfortunately, Burris' RBI would be the only run HLGU would allow to make the round trip on the base paths.

Hannibal would add to their lead with seven more runs over the next two frames while shutting out the Pioneers, ending the contest early via run rule.

Carrie Anna Davis and Jordan Janak each collected two hits for the Pioneers in the loss. Davis and Hailey Tarrants recorded the Pioneers' two extra-base hits with doubles. Aimee Buckley took the loss for the Pioneers from the circle.

Game Two: (5-innings)

Crowley's Ridge- 4

Hannibal- LaGrange- 12

Hannibal- MO- The Pioneer offense rallied more runs in game two, improving their run support to four, but would still fall to the Trojans, with HLGU also upping its run support. HLGU blew the game open with an eight-spot in the bottom of the third, which all but sealed the Pioneers' fate.

Junor Hailey Tarrants was the game two workhorse for the Pioneer offense, as the Sikeston, MO native drove in all four runs for CRC. Tarrants opened the contest's scorebook in the first with a single to score two runners, Carrie Anna Davis and Jordan Janak, giving the Pioneers the early advantage, 2-0. Tarrants delivered again for CRC at the top of the third, scoring junior Jada Diaz with a fielder's choice, to once more put the Pioneers ahead of the Trojans, 3-2.  Lastly, the junior catcher drove in senior Lilly Wessel off a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth in an effort to stave off the Trojans' run-rule ending, but the delay would be short-lived with HLGU plating the game-ending run in the bottom half of the fifth.

CRC amassed 8 hits and was led by Tarrants, who was 1-2 with 4 RBIs. Carrie Anna Davis led in hits going back to back wth a second game of 2-3 from the box. Lauren Jones suffered the loss in the circle.

Up Next: The Pioneers will host Cottey College in a final regular season AMC doubleheader showdown at Pioneer Park this Friday, April 24th, starting at 1:00 PM. #GOPIONEERS
