Pioneers Pick Up Series Sweep Over Bearcats- Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 2/28/26
The Pioneers earned their first series sweep of the year, taking all three contests from the Bearcats of Rust College on the road. The Pioneers rallied together 51 hits and scored 51 runs in the three-game stretch.
Game Two:
Crowley's Ridge- 20
Rust College- 15
Holly Springs, MS- In the middle contest of the series, it would be another huge offensive performance from the Pioneers with the Crowley boys rolling out a consecutive 20 hit performance and also scoring a consecutive 20 runs on the Rust Bearcats. Despite the massive offensive performance from CRC, Rust College would muster its own charge in the game, but thanks to timely swings by the Pioneers, CRC would stick it out for the win. The big swing award of game two is gifted to junior Rilyn Coleman, who earned the title in the 5th inning with the Idabel, OK native blasting a critical grand slam, making him 3-3 on the day with 5 RBIs and placing the Pioneers back in the driver's seat. Senior Kolby Webb did his part for the Pioneers, driving in 4 runners going 2-5 with a double in the contest. Reece Bariola, James Wilson, and Parker Gordon also recorded multiple RBIs as the trio each drove in two in the win. At the top of the Pioneer lineup, leadoff hitter Aiden Smith led the team with 6 plate appearances, recording 3 hits and scoring 3 runs, and Lawson DeVault followed Smith with a 2-2 day, including drawing 3 walks and scoring three times himself in the 2-hole. Five Pioneers earned innings on the bump in the game two win, with freshman Kamron Isbell earning the start, but it would be senior Jordan Brown who took the win while sophomore Aydan Trenchard claimed the save in his 2.0 innings of action, allowing just one hit.
Game Three:
Crowley's Ridge- 11
Rust College- 3
Holly Springs, MS- In the series final contest, the Pioneers would finish off the Bearcats with 11 runs off 12 hits and hold Rust to just 3 runs off 8 hits. CRC hammered on 7 runs in the game before they saw any retaliation from Rust, but with a stout pitching performcace form freshman Brennon Burch, it was no sweat for the team in green to pull out the win with Burch going 6.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) off 7 hits while striking out 7 in his outing. Lawson DeVault led the offensive attack with a 3-4 performance, driving in a team-high 3 RBIs. Senior James Wilson matched DeVault's RBI effort with the Tennessean, also driving in 3 RBIs on his 1-2 day. Senior Kolby Webb concluded the multi-RBI club this game with the Cabot, AR native smashing his 3rd homer of the year in the 6th with a 2-run shot to left. JP Wills and Landen Kizer also added a pair of hits, including a double each, in the win.
"I was really proud of our starting pitching this weekend. Our pitching staff continues to get better week to week, and you can see the growth happening in real time. The young guys are starting to slow the game down and trust their stuff, and that's a big step forward for us.
Between the midweek game and the three-game series, we learned a lot about who we are and what we're capable of. I like the direction we're headed, and I like where we are as we move into conference play. We're not a finished product, but we're trending the right way."- Spencer Adcock, Head Coach.
Up Next: The Pioneers will kick off conference action this coming weekend, March 6th and 7th, hosting Columbia College at Pioneer Park. #GOPIONEERS
