NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A few days after a conference sweep, the Crowley's Ridge College Pioneers dropped a pair of midweek games to Central Baptist (Ark.) College at North Little Rock's Burns Park. Game one ended with the Pioneers on the losing end of a 13-1 contest, before the tying run grounded out in game two to fall 7-5.
Game One
Crowley's Ridge – 1
Central Baptist – 13
Crowley's Ridge (10-20) saw the hosting Mustangs (18-19) plate three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and could not kick the bats into gear, tallying just one hit in the first five innings.
CRC starter Kyle Russell (1-2) was chased after 3 1/3 innings, giving up 11 runs, eight of which were earned. The Pioneers committed four errors in the loss.
The Pioneers tacked on their lone run in the top of the sixth inning which was led off by Kole Simms' double. The next batter, Phoenix Beal, singled home Simms to put the men in green on the board.
Simms collected two of the Pioneers' three hits, with Beal's RBI single being the third. The Pioneers showed good patience at the dish, drawing four walks.
Game Two
Crowley's Ridge – 5
Central Baptist – 7
Bobby Wright led off game two for Crowley's Ridge (10-21). That walk was the first of three in the opening frame - one of which was drawn by Tanner Davis with the bases loaded to see Wright touch home to take an early lead.
The CBC Mustangs (19-19) battled with two outs in the home half of the first, tying the game on an RBI single.
Phoenix Beal led off the top of the third with a single into left field, setting up his courtesy runner (Benton Lashley) to score two batters later off of the bat of Adonis Thomas who doubled home the second Pioneer run. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the third, adding one more run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-2 lead into the top of the seventh.
Wright started the inning with an infield single but was erased when Kole Simms reached on a fielder's choice. After Beal was hit by a pitch, Simms moved into scoring position, where Trey Gossett promptly doubled home the Pioneer right fielder. Tanner Davis would drive in a run on the next at-bat when his groundout allowed Matthew Parker (running for Beal) to score. For the third consecutive at-bat, the Pioneers plated a run when Thomas laced a single into right-center field to score Gossett. With the tying run at the plate, the Mustangs coaxed a groundout to end the game with the Pioneers on the wrong side of a 7-5 final.
Zorey Chipman (0-4) picked up the loss in his latest start, giving up five runs on as many hits.
Beal and Thomas led the Pioneer bats with two hits each, while Gossett and Wright's singles were the Pioneers' other two hits.
