JOPLIN, Mo. – Crowley's Ridge College opened their 2022 season in Missouri, taking on Baptist Bible (Mo.) College in the first doubleheader of a four-game weekend. The Pioneers took both games, first with a 3-1 pitcher's duel before shutting out the Patriots 7-0 in game two.
Game One
Crowley's Ridge – 3
Baptist Bible – 1
First inning fireworks were on tap for the season opener, with all four runs being scored in the opening frame.
Crowley's Ridge (1-0) had Bobby Wright jump on the first pitch of the 2022 campaign by lacing a single into right field. After moving to second base on Chipper Lamb's sacrifice, Trey Gossett drove home Wright with a double to right field. Austin Gross began his year with a bang, launching his second career homer over the left-field fence for a two-run home run.
With the ball in his hand with a 3-0 lead, Corbett Seib's (1-0) first batter pounded a pitch over the left-field wall to put the Patriots (0-5) on the board. Settling down, Seib allowed just one more hit in the game – striking out four and walking two in the win.
"He recovered fine," said CRC coach Brenden Camp. " Corbett basically had to take the whole first inning to get the feel for the [turf]. mound."
Pioneer sophomore Kole Simms tallied two of CRC's six hits with a pair of singles. Also recording a hit in his collegiate debut was Matthew Parker.
Game Two
Crowley's Ridge – 7
Baptist Bible – 0
A big third inning pushed the men in green to a game two victory. In his first plate appearance for the Pioneers, Corbett Seib launched a double but was unable to score.
Crowley's Ridge (2-0) threatened in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with one out; however, the Patriots (0-6) managed back-to-back strikeouts to send the Pioneers back to the dugout emptyhanded.
Seib led off the third inning with a single to left field, followed by a single to right off of the bat of Trey Gossett. Austin Gross laid down a single to the left side to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch allowed Seib to plate the first run of the second game, before a bases-loaded walk brought in the second.
Newcomer Tanner Davis made noise in his first game in green and black, hitting a two-run double into right field. Garett Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to score Zorey Chipman to push the Pioneers to a 5-0 lead after three and a half.
After an RBI single from Bobby Wright in the fifth inning, a pair of untimely passed balls from the Patriots in the top of the seventh inning saw run seven to cross for the Pioneers.
On the bump, Jack Roney (1-0) went the distance, recording a six strikeout shutout.
Speaking to their opponents, Coach Camp said of Baptist Bible's first year of competition, "That team was not bad at all. For a young team, they're going to be pretty good in the near future."
