COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Pioneers ventured to the Magnolia State for the Friday portion of a four-game weekend against the Owls of the Mississippi University for Women, dropping both contests. The first game saw the Pioneers defeated 12-2, before wrapping up with a 4-2 loss.
GAME ONE
Crowley's Ridge - 2
Mississippi University for Women - 12
The Pioneers (9-8) took advantage of defensive miscues to gain an early advantage. After reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing second, Bobby Wright was able to advance to third base after a passed ball. Trey Gossett then drove home his shortstop with a single to left field.
MUW (8-3) wasted no time erasing the early deficit, plating four runs off of four hits in the home half of the first inning. With the bases loaded, starter Jack Roney tossed the first of four strikeouts, then forced Trey Petite to fly out into foul territory to end the threat.
Chipper Lamb picked up the second run for CRC after being hit by a pitch, being driven in by Nate Finney in the top of the fourth inning. Meanwhile, The W would score two runs in the third, followed by a three-run fourth and sixth inning.
The Pioneers tallied five hits and were led by Zorey Chipman's two.
Jack Roney picked up the loss after 3.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO
Crowley's Ridge - 2
Mississippi University for Women - 4
The Owls (10-4) wasted no time in jumping on Pioneer starter Corbett Seib, popping five hits in the bottom of the first inning while scoring three runs. Unfazed, Seib struck out the final two batters of the inning, stranding two runners.
Crowley's Ridge (9-9) would then be held hitless by MUW's Joel Estabrook until the fifth inning when Garett Wilson earned a single. The junior ace sat down ten Pioneer batters on strikes throughout six complete innings of work.
After spotting the Owls a fourth run in the fourth inning, reigning A.I.I. player of the week Austin Gross continued his torrid pace of late by doubling home Bobby Wright and Trey Gossett in the top of the sixth to cut the Owl lead in half. Dalton Cohea would then shut the door on CRC, earning the save in the 4-2 win.
Trey Gossett led the Pioneers with two hits, including a double in the sixth.
Corbett Seib picked up the loss, earning four runs while striking out seven Owl batsmen.
